Safety & Training Shorts: Commercial or Industrial Water Hazards

While water hazards such as ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water can be attractive to many people in a community for many reasons, they also create liability concerns for landowners or tenants of the property. There are several steps that can be taken to increase safety and limit liability.

Actual legal liability varies from state to state so it is important to be familiar with the laws that apply in your area and to fulfill those legal responsibilities.

A hazard is generally defined as something that creates a risk of harm. Hazards are not always readily apparent to the average person; as a result, controls to prevent injury and establish the safest possible environment are often required. Water hazards may have conditions which do need to be considered, controlled or eliminated. When in industrial or commercial areas, they may contain contaminants, swimming hazards, or simply be an attractive nuisance.
