Alten Construction Wraps Up Largest Project to Date at College of Marin

RICHMOND, Calif. — Alten Construction, a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, recently wrapped up its largest project to date with the completion of the Dr. David Wain Coon Center for Student Success at the College of Marin.

Alten Construction was tasked with building a new 86,000-square-foot learning resource center located on the college’s Kentfield Campus at 835 College Avenue. Designed to be a holistic hub of student-centered services, the center integrates critical student programs, learning spaces and wellness support, including a library, cafe, learning spaces, meeting spaces, lounges, computer lab, event space and career center, among others.

The commercial construction company’s scope of the $86 million project included construction of the new building, along with site and utility improvements, new exterior plazas and landscaping. Additionally, the latest advances in A-V technologies were installed to provide flexibility for user input and presentations. Outdoor terraces and decks were built on the second and third floors that face south, offering views of the redwoods along Corte Madera Creek and Mount Tamalpais.

“This project was incredibly meaningful to our entire team,” said Bob Alten, co-owner of Alten Construction. “The College of Marin is a cornerstone of the community, and delivering this project during its 100-year anniversary makes it that much more memorable. From the earliest design stages through construction during unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID and rising material costs, this project tested us all. What I’m most proud of is how our construction team, the college, architects, construction managers and subcontractors came together, stayed aligned and delivered the project on time and on budget. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the people. Their collaboration and dedication made this project so successful.”

The project launched in November 2021 and wrapped up in December 2025.

On Wednesday, Feb. 4, the College of Marin hosted a commemorative ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the new facility. During the event, attendees were able to explore the building, engage and connect with services on each floor, and enjoy music, food and activities.

"The Alten Construction team has been incredible to work with,” said Jonathan Eldridge, Ed.D., superintendent and president. “Our special partnership resulted in a truly remarkable building that will serve our students and the larger community for generations to come."
